Thoughts from a member:
The time commitment is incredible. Every Thursday night we attend trainings and one Thursday each month we have business mtgs (75% attendance required for all Thursday meetings). We wear a pager 24/7 and are expected to respond 24/7. You have to have a job and a family that will allow you to leave them when ever the pager goes off. And it always goes off at the most inconvenient time, even on Christmas day. It would be difficult to be a student carrying a big load and be a SAR member at the same time, unless you can skip a lot of classes and not fall behind.
You must be willing to abide by the Sheriffs dress code in order to wear the Class A uniform at special events. Mustache is ok but no beard or long hair. When applying the sheriff does a background check on you.
You must enjoy being out of doors in all seasons 24/7. The majority of callouts occur in the winter. You need to have a 4 wheel drive vehicle for full membership. Associates do not. Snowmobiles and 4 wheelers are also a great asset.
We also do 5-6 Major Community Service Projects each year, and one or two very large Fund Raiser Projects. You will be expected to be at least NASAR TEC III certified within 12 months.
If you are still interested, pick up an application at the Sheriffs office.
